BAE 1073 - MPF Stereo Channel with PSU Has Arrived In House

The Neve 1073 is without a doubt the most legendary pre amp this industry has seen. In 1970, Rupert Neve with Neve electronics was hired to put together a new console for Wessex Studios, who at the time recorded everybody from Queen to The Rolling Stones. This 24 channel console, the Neve A88, was the first console to include the Neve 1073 preamp. Although the original Neve 1073 as well as the mixers that introduced them have fallen into obscurity, to this day the “tone”, coined the authentic Neve sound, is sought after by tens of thousands of engineers. Due to high demand, there are many clones of the Neve 1073 on the modern market, and many of which the attempted emulation fall entirely flat. BAE Audio is one of the companies who’ve taken a crack at emulating the 1073, and have done so with such accuracy emulation is near an unfair description.

BAE have built their 1073 with the EXACT SAME components (legendary transformers) of the original 1073 and the sound it produces is arguably indistinguishable from OG units. Mike Dean (Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Don Toliver, etc.) have switched from original Neve units to BAE units due to their availability and Mike Dean has went as far as to claim he runs his ENTIRE mixes through a 1073 to give his art that “authentic Neve sound”. The word warmth is often touched on in the audio world, and is the pleasurable result of high end analog gear. Same as vacuum tubes and transistors, when transformers are overloaded with too much signal they saturate and result in distortion. When tastefully applied, transformer saturation adds rich harmonic overtones, resulting in neck-cracking mids and a deep, warm low-end. No two preamps saturate the exact same way, and almost no preamp is as pleasurable as the 1073. Hundreds of thousands of hip hop/rock/r&b/soul records are flavoured with this preamp.
